Nigerian ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has said he traveled to Chicago State University with the intention of exposing President Bola Tinubu but left convinced that the president was indeed admitted, attended, and graduated from the institution.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Omokri made this statement when he was asked that he previously criticized Tinubu over allegations relating to his academic records and other issues. He noted that like many Nigerians, he believed what was reported in the media and set out to verify it himself.
According to him, on September 18, 2022, he arrived in Chicago, and on September 19 he went to Chicago State University. He said he was given documentary evidence, photographs, and newspaper clippings. He said he also saw that the university has a hall recognizing Tinubu as an alumnus.
Omokri said that despite the fact that this move was against his political interest, he came out in Chicago to state that the claims were false. He added that he later went to court and, after the Supreme Court judgment, he appeared on a TV program to admit he was wrong. He said the BBC also carried out fact-finding after his visit, which further cleared the President.
He added that his approach is to follow the facts and said he did the same when he traveled to Peru to investigate drug-related allegations against Peter Obi, which he also found to be untrue.
In his statement, “Right there in Chicago, I came out, even though it was against my own political best interest, and I said, look, it is not true. Because, don’t forget, I went there to disgrace the president, but I found out that he actually was admitted, attended, and graduated from Chicago State University.”
“Thereafter, I went to the courts, and then when I went to the courts, I came on this show, if you recall, after the Supreme Court’s judgment, and I said, I was wrong.
