According to PUNCH, veteran entertainer and social commentator Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has opened up about his relationship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing him as both a close friend and a father figure.
Speaking in an interview with Saturday Beats, Charly Boy said his relationship with Obasanjo developed naturally and has grown into one where he can turn to the former president whenever he needs advice or wants to understand an issue.
He said their conversations can last for several hours and cover different subjects, including religion and other matters of personal interest.
Charly Boy said he values Obasanjo’s openness and sincerity, adding that their age difference does not prevent them from having conversations that sometimes feel like those between people of the same generation.
“Sometimes, I feel like he’s my father because he talks like my father and does things like my father. Anytime I’m trying to figure something out, I call him, and he helps me sort it out. For friendship, he’s there; for fatherhood, he’s there. We talk every day.”
Charly Boy also discussed his family and revealed that both of his daughters identify as lesbians, explaining why he chose to accept their decisions despite initially entertainer said his approach to parenting is based on understanding that parents cannot completely control the choices of their adult children. He added parenting style has evolved with younger generations, arguing that parents should advise their children rather than try to control them through force or commands finding it difficult.
He said his younger daughter was the first to tell him about her sexuality several years ago, while his older daughter came out more recently. He acknowledged that accepting his younger daughter’s decision was initially challenging, particularly because she had not had children at the time.
According to him, his older daughter had already raised a family and given him six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
The entertainer said his approach to parenting is based on understanding that parents cannot completely control the choices of their adult children. He added that his main concern is for his daughters to be happy, responsible and able to take care of themselves.
Charly Boy also said his parenting style has evolved with younger generations, arguing that parents should advise their children rather than try to control them through force or commands.
He noted that his decision to speak openly about his family is consistent with the views he has expressed in his book, ‘999’.
