Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has recalled how he and four other governors left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2015 general election.
According to a video from 45:05 posted on Untold Stories on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, Kwankwaso discussed his role in the political movement that eventually ended the PDP’s hold on the presidency.
Speaking on Untold Stories, Kwankwaso said the decision to leave the PDP was based on a shared belief among the governors that Nigeria needed a change in leadership.
He explained that the governors did not immediately participate publicly in the APC’s activities, choosing instead to wait until what they considered the appropriate time.
In his words, Kwankwaso said, “we thought at that time Jonathan was the worst. I was in his party PDP. Five of us left PDP to join APC.
“Not to join all what they were doing underground, we knew what they were doing to some extent. We are part of it because we believe there was need for change.”
Kwankwaso said the group later brought its political strategy, contacts and mobilisation efforts into the APC campaign.
He specifically highlighted Kano State, claiming that his political structure helped deliver about two million votes from the state and contributed significantly to Muhammadu Buhari’s victory over then-President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
