If Subsidy Is Gone & Nigerian Has Pay For That Then Tinubu Owes Us Answer: Where Is The Money? –Atiku Reveals

According to a report by The Sun published on Monday, September 14, 2026, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to account for the money saved following the removal of the petrol subsidy.

Atiku made the demand while commenting on the renewed possibility of industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). He argued that Nigerians have already experienced significant financial pressure since the subsidy was scrapped, citing higher transport fares, rising food costs and increased household expenses.

The former vice president said the latest challenges confronting the university system had further raised questions about the government’s earlier assurance that funds recovered from subsidy removal would be channelled into key areas, including education, healthcare and infrastructure.

According to him, Nigerians who have endured the economic consequences of the policy deserve to know how the resulting savings have been utilised.

Atiku argued that citizens had expected the removal of the subsidy to eventually translate into better public services and improved living conditions. However, he noted that public universities continue to face financial difficulties, while academic staff are still raising concerns over welfare, outstanding payments and other unresolved issues.

The ADC presidential candidate said the situation has intensified concerns over whether the financial benefits associated with the subsidy reform are actually reaching sectors that have a direct impact on Nigerians.

He maintained that the government has a responsibility to provide a transparent account of the funds, particularly because ordinary citizens have continued to bear the effects of higher prices since the policy change.

Atiku added that the possibility of another university strike has made the issue of public spending and the implementation of the government’s economic reforms even more important.

“If the subsidy is gone and Nigerians have paid for that decision, then President Tinubu owes us a simple answer: where is the money?” he said.
