Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has recalled the reaction of robbery victims after he stopped to assist them during a late-night journey while serving as the Divisional Police Officer in Owo, Ondo State.
Disu recounted the experience during an interview from 4:19 on TV Platinum on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, explaining that the victims had continued speaking to him and praying for him after he intervened in their ordeal.
According to the IGP, the victims took his phone number and promised to contact him and visit him later. However, their attitude changed after they asked about his place of work and discovered that he was the police officer in charge of the division.
“They kept on talking to me, they kept on praying for me and they took my phone numbers and said they will call me, they will come and visit me,” Disu said.
He explained that the victims eventually asked where he was working or staying, prompting him to reveal that he was serving as the DPO in Owo.
“So finally when they were about to come down they asked me where I was working or staying and I told them I was working in Owo that I was the Divisional Police Officer,” he recalled.
Disu said the victims became quiet immediately after learning that he was a police officer, with one of them simply describing him as “olopa,” a Yoruba expression commonly used to refer to a policeman.
“They kept quiet and said ‘olopa’, I said yes, police,” he said.
The IGP added that despite taking his contact details and promising to visit him, the victims never contacted him afterwards.
“They took my phone number and came out of my vehicle and till today they have not called me to thank me,” Disu said.
