Nigerian Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has responded to an X user who wished him a “miserable death” after he paid tribute to late veteran Nollywood actor, Olu Jacobs, on social media.
The X user, identified as Nonso, reacted to Omokri’s tribute to Jacobs by writing: “You will die a miserable death Reno.”
Responding to the comment, Omokri said he had reviewed the user’s profile and observed that he had wished multiple people a “miserable death” over the past year.
Addressing the user directly, Omokri wrote: “Dear Nonso, Thank you for your feedback. Perusing your profile, I have seen that, in the last year, you have wished multiple people a ‘miserable death’. Has it ever occurred to you, sir, that all death is death?”
Omokri argued that the dead could not be conscious of the circumstances of their death and, therefore, could not experience what he described as a “miserable death.”
“The dead are not conscious of how they die, therefore it is not possible to have a miserable death. It is only a miserable life one can have, and to God be the glory, I have had an outstanding life,” he said.
He further stated that the timing and circumstances of death were ultimately beyond the control of individuals.
“Furthermore, God is in complete control of how, when and where we die,” Omokri added.
The former presidential aide said Nonso and others could only do what God had already permitted, adding that he had accepted the inevitability of death.
“Nonso, you, and any other human, can only do to me what God has already decided. And even if I die today, I die fulfilled as the first Nigerian to attempt an Everest climb and succeed at climbing and hoisting Nigeria’s flag at Kilimanjaro, Batoka, Machu Picchu, Entoto, and other mountains,” he said.
Omokri also urged the X user not to fear death, quoting a line attributed to Roman military leader Julius Caesar.
“Every soul must taste death, and passing on is something I have accepted and am prepared for,” he said.
“For as Julius Caesar said: ‘Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once.’”
Rather than respond with a similar curse, Omokri said his prayer was for Nonso and others who engage in such comments to gain wisdom and focus on making meaningful use of their lives.
“My prayer for you is that God, the Author of life, grant you and others like you wisdom to understand that death is a debt we must all pay,” he wrote.
He added that people should prepare for their eventual death instead of wishing harm on others because of political or other differences.
“Therefore, the best use of life is to prepare for our eventual passing, rather than to spend it wishing disaster on our fellow human beings because of political or other differences,” Omokri said.
Concluding his response, the former presidential aide thanked the X user for his comment and offered him a blessing.
“In any case, thanks again, and may God bless you, Nonso,” he wrote.
