According to a report by TVC on September 27, 2026, Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has expressed regret over a comment he made linking Peter Obi’s family to issues of extravagance.
The comment was in reaction to reports that President Bola Tinubu’s son was seen with a wristwatch valued at ₦135 million. At the time, Okonkwo went on television and said members of Obi’s family would never be associated with such luxury.
In the latest interview, however, the ADC chieftain said he now has doubts about that position and believes he may have been misled by incomplete information.
“According to Okonkwo, “Now, let me tell you because I was misled. Hold on. There was a time they figured out that Tinubu’s son was wearing a watch up to N135 million. I ran out on television, and I said nobody from Peter Obi’s family can ever wear such a thing when people are dying in poverty. I stick my reputation on it. Can I still say that today?””
He explained that his reaction was driven by frustration over poverty in the country. By putting his reputation on the line, he said he wanted to draw attention to the contrast between the lives of ordinary Nigerians and those of political elites.
The issue of expensive items owned by children of politicians often triggers debate online, especially amid complaints about hardship and inflation.
Okonkwo’s latest remarks show a shift in tone as he admits the need for caution before making sweeping statements about public figures and their families.
The ADC has continued to criticize the Tinubu administration on economic policies as political activities build up toward 2027.
