According to a report by Al Jazeera English on Tuesday September 22, 2026, China has criticised US sanctions targeting Iranian airlines, describing the measures as illegal and opposing unilateral restrictions imposed without international authorisation.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry made the comments a day after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that American sanctions could force Iranian airlines to shut down operations worldwide within days as the Trump administration moves to increase economic pressure on Tehran.
Speaking at a news conference, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said China consistently rejects unilateral sanctions that are not supported by international law or authorised by the United Nations Security Council.
The dispute comes shortly before a scheduled meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the United States on Thursday.
China’s criticism of the sanctions adds another point of disagreement ahead of the meeting, as Washington continues to pursue measures aimed at putting pressure on Iran.
