Labour Party chieftain Abayomi Arabambi has rejected claims that he is using former Anambra State governor and NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi to gain attention or revive his political career.
Arabambi said his involvement in politics did not begin with Obi, stressing that his family has a long history of political participation.
Speaking during an interview from 22.52 with News Central TV, Arabambi pointed to his father’s political career, saying he served as a two-time member of the House of Assembly in 1979.
He said his father was already active in politics at a time when some of those criticising him today had not been born.
Arabambi also recalled that his father’s political generation participated in efforts that defeated the administration of former President Shehu Shagari.
He said people who do not understand Nigeria’s political history may wrongly assume that his current actions are motivated by a desire for attention.
Arabambi further explained that he was already a member of the Labour Party’s National Working Committee when Obi joined the party.
His comments came amid his legal action against the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, over requests for certified academic records relating to Obi’s reported Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy.
In his words, “If anybody is saying I’m chasing clout, may I remind them that my father was a two-time House of Assembly member in 1979, when some of them were not born. We defeated Shagari; we defeated all of them together. A lot of people don’t understand our political terrain.”
