A trending video of a suspected robber arrested by the Abia State Police Command has gone viral, with the suspect praising the officers for professionalism and giving them a “5-star rating”.
In the video shared online on Tuesday, the suspect said he was moved to commit the crime after seeing a woman counting a large amount of money while he was at a pool house.
“According to the suspect, I went to play pool and saw the woman counting money, I’d never seen such money in my life, so I was moved. If I was a good thief I would have gone but…,” he said.
He went on to commend the Abia Police for arresting him without assaulting him, describing their conduct as respectful and professional.
“According to the suspect, Abia Police, you people tried. I give you 5-star. You didn’t beat me, you talked to me well,” he added.
The video has since sparked reactions on social media, with many Nigerians describing the suspect as “humble” and “honest” despite the crime. Others praised the Abia State Police Command for what they called civil handling of suspects.
The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, has not released an official statement on the arrest as of press time. The details of the incident, including location and amount involved, are yet to be confirmed by the police.
Security experts have warned that poverty and peer pressure remain major drivers of petty crime, while calling for more public enlightenment and youth empowerment programs.
In a related development, the Nigeria Police Force has repeatedly urged officers to uphold human rights and professionalism during arrests and investigations.
Meanwhile, the suspect is said to be in police custody and will be arraigned in court after investigation is concluded.
