Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, on Tuesday said he will not oppose the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but maintained that he has a presidential candidate in the Labour Party.
Governor Otti stated this during a media parley in Umuahia while responding to questions on politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“According to the Governor, I’m not going to oppose the candidacy of President Tinubu, but I have a presidential candidate from the Labour Party. That is where I belong, and that is where I will work,” Otti said.
The Abia Governor, who is a chieftain of the Labour Party, said his administration’s focus remains on governance and delivering dividends of democracy to Abians, regardless of party affiliation at the federal level.
He added that he enjoys a good working relationship with the Federal Government and will continue to collaborate with President Tinubu to attract development to Abia State.
“According to Governor Otti, we will work with whoever is in power at the center to ensure that our people get the infrastructure, roads and support they need,” he said.
Political analysts say Otti’s position reflects a balancing act between party loyalty and state interests, as many South-East governors have adopted similar approaches.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, is also from the South-East and remains popular in the region.
In a related development, President Tinubu has met with several opposition governors in recent months as part of efforts to foster national unity and development.
Meanwhile, LP supporters have praised Otti for standing firm with the party, while APC members in Abia welcomed his pledge not to oppose the President.
