A Nigerian man has come under heavy backlash online after he was allegedly accused of withdrawing ₦1.4 million from his mother’s bank account to play betting while she battles stroke.
The allegation surfaced on Monday after screenshots and a video claiming to show bank transactions and the ailing woman were shared on X, formerly Twitter. The posts quickly went viral and sparked widespread condemnation.
“According to posts online, the man took ₦1.4 million from his mother’s savings without her consent. The woman is currently receiving treatment for stroke and relies on the funds for medical care,” one user wrote.
Social media users described the act as wicked and inhumane. Many called on the police and relevant authorities to arrest and prosecute the man. Others urged banks to strengthen security measures to prevent unauthorized withdrawals by relatives.
“The mother gave birth, trained him, and this is how he repays her? This is evil,” one commenter said.
As of press time, the identity of the man and the bank involved have not been officially confirmed. Neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the family has released a formal statement on the matter.
Medical experts have said stroke patients require consistent treatment, drugs, and therapy, which are often expensive. Cases of financial abuse of elderly and sick parents have drawn public criticism in recent years.
Meanwhile, legal practitioners say if the allegation is proven true, the man could face charges of theft and financial exploitation under Nigerian law.
The incident has reignited conversations online about the need to protect vulnerable parents and set up safeguards on joint or family accounts.
